New form of media publishing

New forms of media publishing
Nowadays, the internet plays a big role in our society. Previously, people only get information from printed material as well as broadcast station, the audience and readers have no ways to change or create their own stories or own videos by them self
Fanfiction
A new trend of media publishing coming out recently, which is Fan fiction. Fanfiction as known as fanfic or fan fiction is now a new trend of media publishing. Fanfiction which is discovered by fans and forming a group, mailing lists and newsgroups for the sharing of fan-written fiction and fan-painted art. (Harmon 2010)

Fans of a story books, idols group, or movie will like to create a blog or a post in the forum, and start to create their own story by using the actual characters, or using the story to continue with their own preferable ending and so on.

Acting upon the fans fascination with the source material and their frustration over the refusal of producers to tell the kind of stories they want to see, usually, fan fiction writers take upon themselves to present a reading of the favored text that may repair or dismiss unsatisfying aspects, or even develop interests not sufficiently explored.  (Mundim 2006, p.231)

[Figure 1] (Source: The Produser )
According to Snurb (2008) show in figure 1 below, there is a Produser chain where participants act more as users which utilizing existing resources or more as producers adding new information varies over time and across tasks.  Overall take on a hybrid users or producer role which inextricably interweave both forms of participation and thereby become produsers. (Snurb 2008)

Example of Harry Porter Fanfiction

[Source: Harry Porter]

For example Harry Porter fan fiction is quite famous, the fans of Harry Portter use the character of Harry to create story, fans can publish their fan fiction freely as long as they didn’t use it to get a profit, then it will not goes against copyright problems.

Issues arise:

Fan fiction has come across some copyright problems. In general, copyright holders, such as authors or production companies, feign ignorance at the burgeoning community of writers producing fiction in the universe they ‘own’. (Harmon 2010) Moreover, fans can free publishing their fan fiction online whereby checking the author explicitly posts a “Sandbox Open” sign, then fans must leave the universe alone. (Bunnell 2010)
According to Mundim (2006 p.234)Fan fiction moves relentlessly as a phenomenon and a practice taking the collective text as the base from which to generate a wide range of media-related stories, the fan readers exhibiting a fierce desire to engage, to create and share; fan fiction are not unique in their status of popular readers or publishers but they have developed both popular reading and self-sufficient publishing to an art form.

There are some fan fiction where fans make it as videos, cut and paste from the twilight movies.

(Nikkis n.d) Blogging community is basically a group of readers who visit a particular blog, which diversify blog reading habits. (Lim 2006)
Several ways to build a blog community by Nikkies

  2. Kindly leave a comment with URL when come across others blogs, by leaving a comment the owner of the blog would be able to know you as their readers and there will be a possibility for them to browse to your blog.
  3. If there are readers who leave  comments, kindly reply them so that they know the author is actually concern with their opinion.
  4. Kindly list the blog in directories therefore it is easier for the “netizen “ to search for your blog.

  7. Marketing the blog, such as make links to others online social network for readers share and link to particular posts as well, for example Facebook, Twitter etc.
According to White (2006 n.d) There are three main patterns of blogging community
Which are Single Blog/Blogger Centric Community, the Central Connecting Topic Community and the Boundaried Community. These three patterns are with wide variety of hybrid forms emerging between the three. (White 2006)

Basically by looking at the patterns it can be grouping them as for example, technology/ design, social architecture, role of the content of subject matter and issues. (White 2006)

One of the examples for blogging community is single blog/ blogger centric community

One example from this community is The Knowledge Tree

Where it is the first form of blog based community to emerge as readers begins returning to early bloggers’ sites they are not only commenting and get to know the blogger but the community of commentors.(White 2006)

It is like a place that people joining the community will be able to communicate to each other by commenting. There might be more than one author writing and posting in the blog.

Classification of blogs and opinion about the most appropriate classification appproach

Among all blogs available online, there are various type of blogs with different classification. The classification of a particular blog is depending on the author of the blog. For instant, some of it is classified by using the blog’s content, topics the author writing, the blog’s style and so on. For example there are blogs which classify by :

Topics, Genre/ Subjects matter
According to Technorati there are blogs classify as:
-Living blog eg : Cassiopeia  basically talking about daily living stuff, use to keep in touch with family and friends, lifestyle, arts, health, religions.

-Technology  eg: the windows blog   which discuss about new features or updates in Windows.

-Entertainment  eg: fashion follows yoochun which is posting about idols, music, movies, updates of particular artist

-Sport blog, which posting about sport related news
    - Science blog, posting updates regarding science topics
According to TDavid (2008) Media type are:
           - Linklog eg: delicious
  Device Blog
  1. Moblog  eg: flickr  sending pictures by mobile devices. (TDavid 2008)
  Satus of Publishers:
  1. Business eg:  The digerati life  either run by businesses as a business-to-business or business-to-consumer communication tool and is likely to have industry news, company information, new breakthroughs and upcoming events, and offers. (Smich 2010)
  2. Corporate blogs eg: Air Asia  which post about the new services offers, advertise their company.
Opinion about the most appropriate classification approach
There are few types of blogs that being pointed out by Margaret Simons:
  1. Pamphleteering blogs
  2. Digest blog,
  3. Advocay blog
  4. Popular Mechanic blog
  5. Exhibition blog
  6. Gatewatcher blog
  7. Australian blog
  8. Diaries
I found out that the exhibition blog is similar to the living blog stated in Technorati, where it is a broad varies of topics which related to living stuff, it is also discussing some arts works. For example, Carmi’s Art/ Life World  this blog is basically do posting on author own art works, display the photos regarding the crafts that make by the author. This is similar to exhibition blog where maintained by craftspeople, artists, writers, which bring their work to a wider audience, extraordinary photos of really incredibly creative work. (Simons 2008) By comparing the classification of the above, arts blog is classify in living topics at Technorati however it is classify as exhibition blog in Texonomy

Why Blogging?

a. Blogs as current phenomenon and benefits to the community

Weblog which is a “log” of the web-a diary-style site which the author links to other web pages that the author finds interesting using entries posted and cited to others. (Perrone 2004) Nowadays, internet seems to be a main source for people who use it in their daily life, people are not only use internet to search for information, but also publish their thoughts and dairies online.

According to research in Technorati cited in marketing chart , the blogosphere seems to be increase, there are 70 million weblog being tracked from year 2003-2007. It is continuously increasing day by day until now. Moreover, Technorati has been tracking 3,000 - 7,000 new splogs created each day. (Marketing Charts 2007) Blogging trend are seems to be different in different countries. Blogging have various categories for example, technology, politic, entertainment, living, business and spots.

These are all the trends of blogging. However, according to a research done by MSN LIVE Space, for Asian country there are 74% bloggers blog about family and friends. (Ramadass 2006) Base on the survey done by Technorati, over 1000 bloggers reveals both personal and professional topics are equally popular. (White 2009)

The blogging trend will be difference when it comes into global, for example, music topics are more famous than political in Asia while Europe countries not use to blog about personal, lifestyle and religious topics. (White 2009) Below show the statistic of blogging trend globalization. Moreover, there are also various types of blogs nowadays. Type of blogs are categorize as text base and other media base, for text base where include personal, collaborative, corporate, topical and spam blog. However, other media blogs are podcasts/ videocasts and photologs. (Blogging the Phenomenon n.d) Childs (2009), stated that individual or personal blogs are more prevalent in China and India, nevertheless Korean are more into collaborative blogging.

The benefits of having a personal blog is to allow individual share about their daily life and as a update and keep in touch with their friends.

Collaborative blog which can reduce time spent updating the site per person. (Blogging the Phenomenon n.d) According to a research from MSN Live Space, 20% of Malaysians voted for Blogs focusing on politics. (Ramadass 2006) Blogging promotes democratization by enhancing the civil liberties of Malaysians, and helps to frame the discourse and agenda for public policies. Example of political bloggers Jeff Ooi and Rocky Bru (Tan and Ibrahim 2008) According to John Naughton ( n.d., p.7), blogging phenomenon is its demonstration that the traffic in ideas and cultural products isn’t a one-way street, as it was in the old push-media ecosystem. Blogging, a new media helping the old media in the pass to develop more benifits to the ecosystem. For example above,it is benefit to the society to voice out and give their views and opinion against political issues in Malaysia.
